After David the two lists are not the same list. Matthew follows the royal line through Solomon and counts three groups of fourteen (Matthew 1:17), passing over Ahaziah, Joash, Amaziah and Jehoiakim; Luke follows Nathan, another son of David, and says Joseph was “the son, as was supposed,” of Heli (Luke 3:23). Both are shown, and both arrive at Jesus. Prophets are not fathers in the line, so they hang beside the king or ancestor of their day. Names follow Genesis 5 and 11, Ruth 4:18–22, Matthew 1:1–17 and Luke 3:23–38; Luke’s Cainan, between Arphaxad and Shelah, is in his list and not in the Hebrew of Genesis 11.
